Astrology Bingo
Review by Fou Scarf

We enter a glitzy galaxy, with tiny, coloured graphics projected through the air, glitter sprinkled on the tables, and soft, suffused lighting. Earth, Wind and Fire is playing in the background as we are lulled into a laid-back party atmosphere.

The opening night of Croydonites festival sees all manner of life-forms turn up for Astrology Bingo by dance theatre troupe Figs in Wigs, including astrology lovers, total sceptics and even bingo virgins.

We receive our personalized zodiac bingo cards from the Figs, dressed as friendly aliens in bespoke silver shoes and metallic jumpsuits, with pink cheeks, blue eyeshadow, zig zag lightning eyebrows, and dark curly wigs.

The opening musical number, which sees them throwing shapes and singing about the planets, is high voltage, fun and razor-sharp.
The Figs in Wigs reappear as tartan-clad air hostesses complete with a prize trolley. They are charming and terrifying. Interchangeable and everywhere. Are there 5 of them or 10,000?

The bingo takes off in witty and sarcastic fashion. An early prize  is a nose-flute rendition of a song of your choice. The bingo calls are repeated on screen in a kaleidoscope of colour, keeping us all up to speed. By the interval we are all trained up. Guest cabaret artists, Vijay Patel and Rhys’s Pieces treat us to a flash of absurd clowning and exuberant joy to backing tracks, which BSL signer Anna joins in.  In the second half we are back to bingo and putty in their hands. There are serious squeals and shouts from the audience as we roll to a rhythmic crescendo and a winner is declared. We return to Earth with a smooth landing and a big grin.

Astrology Bingo
Review by Stephanie Josephs

It’s astrology bingo bingo bingo, are you gonna win though, win though win though?

You’ll be sure to feel like a star at the Figs in Wigs‘ Astrology Bingo. The space is draped in futuristic glam and fairy lights. The intergalactic adventure begins with a greeting from the Figs in Wigs- a UK female led performance company. The five performers wear silver jumpsuits and metallic headwear as they hand you your very own personalised birth chart that will be your bingo playing card for the night.

The room is filled with tables sprinkled with sparkly confetti and a glitter ball reflects the ambient lights overhead. The Figs in Wigs do a fantastic job of welcoming the ‘earthlings’ and taking us on a journey through the meanings of the planets of the solar system  - with inflatable visual aids - and the signs of the zodiac with humorous symbolic costumes and skits.

As a comedy ensemble, the Figs work seamlessly together, combining brilliantly expressive faces with quirky one liners and cute choreography (Planet song dance = new TikTok trend?).

This is not just pure entertainment - you also get to play a game of bingo so have a dabber at hand  to select your Scorpio moon or Libra in Uranus and be in with a chance to win prizes.

The entertainment is supported by a soundtrack of disco beats, 'cruise -like' background chill, and game show sound effects with a few instruments thrown in for good measure. You will leave having learnt a bit more about how the universe influences your best and worst traits - and humming the Astrology Bingo theme tune.

A wonderful beginning to the Croydonites Festival.
