Vanessa Macaulay / Made Not Born

11 May 7.30pm / The Front Room
Suitable for 16+

Made Not Born is my personal story of growing up in Hertfordshire, trying to fit in. From Swan Lake to the Spice Girls via a bodybuilder mother, Made Not Born is my search for belonging. In the creation of this piece, it became clear that my relationship with my mum is a significant part of my search which is influenced by the Internet, my mother’s body and our link. Follow me as I navigate a way to view my life, in my body, in Britain.

Vanessa is a solo practitioner that works in the intersection of theatre and performance. Within her practice she plays with the idea of fact and fiction to locate a safe space to explore identity politics, more notably what it means to exist in the world in a specific body.  Her work orbits around movement, text and video. Vanessa is currently a PhD student at Queen Mary, University of London where her practice is embedded within her research.

Audience Feedback

'Macaulay's "Made not born" is a fresh and compelling take on the big topics of identity and belonging. With her great stage presence, Vanessa presents a witty act of balancing between...fragility and force.' -  Tatjana Kijaniza

'Made not born was an enticing and thought provoking experience. A mix of humour and serious subject, it really makes you question your own individual identity and the making of it.' - Gemma Mainwaring
