One girl, two cities, on a journey of self-discovery. “Step into the raw and relatable world of LEI-LDN”, a compelling play following Chardaye, a young mixed-race woman, as she relocates from Leicester to South London. Blending spoken word, comedy, and movement, LEI-LDN offers a vibrant exploration of identity and belonging.
LEI-LDN tells the story of Chardaye, a self-assured mixed-race woman raised in predominantly white spaces by her white mother. Chardaye's world is turned upside down when an unexpected move to South London forces her to live with her Jamaican aunt. Through this transition, she confronts questions about her blackness and her place within her dual heritage. The play explores themes of identity, race, and self-acceptance, highlighting the struggles and triumphs of navigating a mixed-race identity. LEI-LDN emphasises the nuances of embracing one’s full heritage rather than feeling the need to fit into a singular racial category. As Chardaye embarks on a path of self-discovery, she uncovers and reconnects with the often overlooked history of mixed-race individuals. This multidisciplinary show invites the audience to experience comedy, art installation, spoken word, verbatim, and movement, creating a rich and engaging narrative. These varied art forms vividly depict Chardaye’s inner and outer journey, offering a unique and immersive theatrical experience.
