Review: KH Del Rio Smith / DESCENT

KH compares the myth of Sumerian goddess Inanna’s descent into the underworld with their high school journey. They describe how one boy had sought them out. The pounding heartbeat that sounds in the background being used effectively to build the tension as we hear how this boy manipulated them and how their relationship with him became increasingly toxic to their self-definition, so they gave more of themself away. KH has creatively interwoven songs to call the audience to empathise with them, they have reminded us at the end that bad things don’t have to define you and that they can be made beautiful. The performance is an amalgamated mix of showing off hoarded past treasures, telling Inanna’s story and the personally written songs of KH, which merge seamlessly together to create an emotionally resonant whole.
