Review: Dick's Picks Comedy Night

With a dynamic line up of stars Nick Helm, Dick Denham, Louise Bastock, Til Fletcher, Sharifa Butterfly and Elgin Edison, Dick’s Picks Comedy Night was guaranteed to be a good time! Croydon based comedian Dick Denham not only opened the show, talking about his favourite London Borough and the types of people he finds in his local Holland and Barrett, but also curated it, handpicking from local emerging comedians to well established big names. Expertly compèred by Louise Bastock, gut-burstingly funny in her own right, each act was given their time to shine.

Emerging comedian and Croydon local Elgin Edison decided to show us all the tricks of the inner workings of a comedian’s set, including the impact of a good lie and why he chooses not to. Til Fletcher deftly wove a story about her recent health troubles and her pride in being lazy. Sharifa Butterfly was the standout of the night, smoothly waltzing in with a story about the train journey she had just got off. Her improvised style of comedy established an immediate rapport with the audience, especially when she brought people into her set. After such a buffet of excitement and hilarity, the headliner Nick Helm was a little disappointing. Personally, with so much talent on offer, I would have preferred longer sets from the comedians in the second third of the show, rather than Helm’s shouty style of comedy, however, he was easily a crowd favourite, and ended the event with a bang. This packed-out show was a fantastic addition to the Fringe, and helped to introduce a lot of emerging artists to the circuit they belong on.
