Review: 'Evita Too' by Sh!t Theatre

Evita Too is a funny, interesting and slightly wacky (in a good way) two woman performance by Sh!t Theatre (Louise Mothersole and Rebecca Biscuit). They take us through the life of Argentinian Isabel Perón, who started as a dancer and caught the attention of President Juan Perón, through to her succeeding as president after his death and being controlled by “El Brujo” (The Wizard) before being overthrown by a military coup. At first when they apologise for it being a “work in progress”, they give the impression that the piece has been thrown together in a short space of time, but as the work progresses the sharp observations and detailed research of Isabel's life and Argentine history suggest otherwise.

The performance combines the feel of standup comedy with a musical, but also a presentation, with slides and videos playing behind the performers at times. Songs are interjected throughout, such as a comically upbeat song about the coup and a song about the “El Brujo” character. Mothersole and Biscuit seem to bounce ideas off each other effortlessly, and work together throughout to keep the jokes and the story flowing.

Throughout, we are also encouraged to question why Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice would write a musical about Evita Perón, who died young and beautiful, rather than Isabel Perón who became the first woman to serve as president of a country, and is still alive.

The only aspect of the performance that didn't make sense to me was the naked rollerskating which, although brave, didn't quite connect to the rest of the piece. I think the performance would still have been full of humour, observation and wackiness without it, because overall Evita Too is an entertaining and fun show.

'Evita Too' was performed on 14 October at The Front Room as part of Croydonites Festival of New Theatre 2025.
